When it comes to teaching numbers 0–10 in kindergarten, it’s all about making learning hands-on, active, and fun. These early math lessons lay the foundation for everything else, so it’s important that our littlest learners have lots of chances to see, say, and interact with numbers in meaningful ways. If you’re looking for low-prep, high-impact ways to introduce and teach numbers 0-10, I’ve got you covered. From movement-based games to sensory activities and no-prep printables, these ideas will make number learning a breeze for you and your students!

These 5 fun and easy ways to teach numbers 0-10 are perfect for kindergarten!

1. Move and Count: Number Hop

Young kids love to move, and honestly, it’s one of the BEST ways to help them remember new concepts! For this activity, simply write numbers 0–10 on pieces of painter’s tape and stick them to the floor. Call out a number and have students hop to it, tiptoe to it, or even stomp to it like dinosaurs. Want to level it up? Give this a try:

  • Call out a number AND a movement style (“Tiptoe to number 6!”)
  • Have students count aloud as they hop from number to number
  • Use number cards and have a student be the “caller” for extra engagement

If your classroom is small, you can adapt this as a seated activity with number cards. To play, students will hold up the right number or tap it on a mat! You can absolutely make this concept work, no matter how limited your space is.

2. Sing and Build Number Recognition

Teach numbers 0-10 with fun videos like this one by Jack Hartman.

There’s a reason songs stick with us: they’re powerful memory tools! When it comes to the kindergarten crowd, there’s no denying how well songs and music work for learning new things! Take advantage of this and use catchy number songs during circle time or transitions to build number recognition and rote counting skills. Some of our class favorites include:

Have students hold up number flashcards or fingers as they sing to reinforce quantity and recognition at the same time. You can squeeze these songs into the little pockets of time in your day for a quick and lively number review that your students will love!

3. Anchor Charts and Hands-on Centers

Anchor charts are a great tool to use when teaching numbers 0-10.

Visuals are everything for young learners. Use number anchor charts to display each number with a numeral, word form, ten-frame, and a corresponding set of objects. You can build them together as a class or use premade ones as a reference throughout your unit. Anchor charts are also the perfect launchpad for hands-on center activities like:

  • Matching numbers to pictures
  • Ten-frame puzzles
  • Number clip cards
  • Counting mats with manipulatives

If you’re looking for a ready-to-use anchor chart option, be sure to check out my Numbers 0-5 Activities and my Numbers 6-10 Activities. Each set features colorful anchor charts that offer the perfect amount of visual support for a variety of lessons. (More on these resources below, so stay tuned!) Use them in their full-size, or print them in a scaled-down version as flashcards to use during center time and small groups. The possibilities are endless!

4. Sensory Bin Number Hunts

This image highlights how you can use sensory bins to teach numbers 0-10 in the classroom.

Bring math to life with a tactile number hunt! Fill a bin with a base filler like rice, colored pasta, or kinetic sand, and hide number cards (0–10) inside. Students take turns finding a card and naming the number aloud. You can make the most out of this activity by extending it with some of these ideas:

  • Have them match numbers to ten-frame flashcards
  • Draw a picture with that number of items
  • Trace the number in a salt tray or on a dry-erase board
  • Use 0-10 tracing worksheets to trace each number as they pull it from the bin
  • Add mini counters or themed manipulatives (like mini apples in September or snowflakes in winter) and have kids count out the matching quantity

This activity is great for small groups, centers, or even fast-finishers who need a little extra engagement. Plus, with some seasonal sensory bin fillers, you can mix it up month after month! Win-win, right?!

A Closer Look at How I Teach Numbers 0-10

Wondering what types of activities your students will focus on for each set of numbers? I’m so glad you asked! These units are in-depth and aim to help your students grasp numbers 0-10 through slow, meaningful practice with a variety of activities.

Introduce the Numbers

First, we focus on a single number per day. I start with numbers 0-5 and then circle back around to 6-10 after we’ve covered that really well. We introduce the number, model it, and focus on counting with fun hands-on learning materials. This is where those anchor charts will come in handy! I love these lessons during the very beginning of the school year because they are basic enough that we can also practice key components of the daily routine as we go.

I also weave in some number formation activities along the way. There are daily tracing practice pages included to focus on number formation throughout the whole unit. This is an extra practice activity that’s easy to implement and makes a big difference over time!

Build the Numbers

Using targeted worksheets, students can trace, count and identify numbers.

Next, we work on building the numbers in many different ways. We use the worksheets and activities inside the units, along with some fun materials, to facilitate this. We spend at least a full day on each of these concepts:

  • Matching sets of objects to a numeral
  • Counting numbers in a tens frame
  • Counting snap cubes (or other manipulatives)
  • Counting a set of objects
  • Look at a number and draw it onto a tens frame
  • Look at a number and draw it (dab, color, or sticker – not on a tens frame)
  • Look at a larger picture and count the number of each of the objects

More or Less Activities

Next, we move on to more or less activities. This is a bit more advanced and great to finish out the unit. There are worksheets included to focus on this skill that we use with simple manipulatives like snap cubes or tens frames and mini erasers. The Numbers 0-5 Unit takes 4-5 weeks in total and aims to provide a solid foundation before we move on to numbers 6-10.
